This bottling in The Alrik series is a strong and aromatic counterpart to the actually classic mild Harz whisky from Elsburn (Glen Els). Since 2012, whiskies made with 100% smoked malt (smoked with beech and alder wood, so-called woodsmoked) have been produced in small batches. The 1912 edition was always stored in PX sherry casks, the 1912 Hekate was even stored in sherry bloddtubes (i.e. very small casks).
Glen Els (from September 2019 distributed under the name Elsburn) is the best-known Harz single malt whisky, produced by Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede, a manufactory for spirits and distillery for whisky in the Harz region of Lower Saxony. The name, like the Elsburn brand, is derived from the geographical location of the spirits manufactory on the Elsbach, in Zorge.
As of 2017, there are already more than 150 distilleries in Germany producing German whisky. Most distilleries produce clear brandies and use whisky production as a niche and side business. Whisky output is at a very low level of sometimes only a few thousand bottles a year depending on the distillery.
