The Wilthen distillery in the Saxon town of Wilthen goes back to Christian Traugott Hünlich and the year 1842. Since 1885, brandy has been produced according to the French model, and today the distillery belongs to Hardenberg-Wilthen AG.
As of 2017, there are already more than 150 distilleries in Germany producing German whisky. Most distilleries produce clear brandies and use whisky production as a niche and side business. Whisky output is at a very low level of sometimes only a few thousand bottles a year depending on the distillery.
