Asbach GmbH goes back to Hugo Asbach and the year 1892, when he founded an export company for German cognac in Rüdesheim am Rhein. The best-known brand is Asbach Uralt, but the brandy chocolates introduced in 1924 are also known worldwide.
As of 2017, there are already more than 150 distilleries in Germany producing German whisky. Most distilleries produce clear brandies and use whisky production as a niche and side business. Whisky output is at a very low level of sometimes only a few thousand bottles a year depending on the distillery.
