This single cask bottling of a Glen Els as an original bottling of the distillery was still produced under the name Hammerschmiede Spirituosen in a narrow bottle shape. The whisky was distilled in 2006, matured in a sherry cognac cask and was bottled in 2009 with 579 individually numbered bottles.
Glen Els (from September 2019 distributed under the name Elsburn) is the best-known Harz single malt whisky, produced by Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede, a manufactory for spirits and distillery for whisky in the Harz region of Lower Saxony. The name, like the Elsburn brand, is derived from the geographical location of the spirits manufactory on the Elsbach, in Zorge.
As of 2017, there are already more than 150 distilleries in Germany producing German whisky. Most distilleries produce clear brandies and use whisky production as a niche and side business. Whisky output is at a very low level of sometimes only a few thousand bottles a year depending on the distillery.
