Whisky production in New Zealand essentially goes back to Scottish immigrants and thus the Wilson family, even though the New Zealand Distillery was opened as early as 1848, but was quickly abandoned. Since 1974, production has taken place on the site of the former Willowbank Brewery, but this distillery was finally closed in 1997. Today, the New Zealand Whisky Company distributes the remaining casks.
