The 12-year-old Elijah Craig has since been discontinued and replaced by a bottling with no age statement. This special bottling exclusively for the Netherlands announced this change, the indication of the ageing period was moved to the label on the back.
Elijah Craig is a very special bourbon, made according to an old, traditional recipe by Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Three types of grain are used in its production: Corn, rye and barley, with corn making up over 70 %. After distillation, Elijah Craig is matured in new American holm oak barrels, charred on the inside, under natural conditions in the Heaven Hill Distillery maturation warehouses. There is no artificial temperature and humidity control.
Whiskey production in the United States is dominated by about a dozen large distilleries, so that almost all whiskey sold comes from a single distillery, and blended whiskey is almost non-existent as a mixture of the whiskey of several distilleries.
The terms single barrel for whiskey from a single cask and small batch for whiskey from a relatively small number of casks have become established as distinguishing features.
